She's
as strong as a mountain
She's as safe as a house
Crazy as a monkey
Quiet as a mouse
She can make up her mind
Stop on a dime
Go from zero to sixty and her little red...
Chorus:
Tambourine, tambourine
She's the best thing I've ever seen
Tambourine, tambourine
Like cold mountain water in a dry desert stream
She's as long as a highway
She's as kind as a child
She's as tame as a lion
And she's as tame as she's wild
She can sing 'em a song
Play right along
Hits the one and the three
On her little red...
(Chorus)
Tambourine
Tambourine
Tambourine
She's as hot as a fire
She's as cold as a rain
She can burn like a fire
She can steam like a train
She can run like a stream
She's a journeyman's dream
Shines like the chrome
On my little red...
(Chorus - Jam - Chorus)
Rob has said that the band was greatly influenced by the songwriting of J.J. Cale in writing "Tambourine."

al's part
I'm gonna break this in to two parts:
als parts, and chuck's solos and fills.
first: Al's part.
the intro is on piano or organ, i gather, or he really fooled the hell out
of me.
nope, he is prolly using a tremol pedal to get that quasi organy voicing, upon
further listening, thiugh I still here an organ vamping.
damn, he's killer, that tendonitis laden gimpy shiny headed right sider.
but for the moe.st part it's:
--------------------------------
-------3---1--------------------
-------3---0--0----5---3---0----
--------------0----5---3---0----
--------------------------------
--------------------------------
this ^ i will use for slur.
/ means slide up
\ means slide down
( ) means the note is accidental or a sympathetic note. it is subtle and may or may not played. it's just there. it is a nuance.this is more for chuck's parts than al's ,
but al does slur some notes to give it that twangly groove, such as this part:
* * * * *
-----------------------------------------------------6-------------
------------8-------------8---------------8----------5*--5-3-0-5---
-----------------10-----------10---9------------10-------5-3-0-5---
--------8^9---9--12---8^9--9--12--10---8^9---9--12-----------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------
*
play both notes, but bend the 5th fret on the B string(e) about a quarter to
half step to give it that country twang,, and play the next riffs as a set
of pulloffs and a hammer on at the end.
this part at the end:
(pulloff) (hammer on)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----5-3-0--------5--------------------------------------------------
-----5-3-0--------5-------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
during the verse,
for the most part, al is doing single string vamps while chuck is comping with
a countryfied shuffle in G:
------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------6-5--------------
---(0)---3-4--3-4-----------------------3-4-3-4------7-0----------
---(0)------------(0)-3-x-3-5---0-3-0-5-------------------0-3-0-5-
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------6-5------------------------------
---3-4-3-4-----------x--3-4-3-4-------7-0--------------------------
------------3-x-3-5--x---------------------------------------------
---------------------x---------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------
then the chorus:
Al is arpeggiating this with these chords:
C-Bflat -G,
but in inversions:
C
Bflat
G
C
Bflat
--------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------8----------6-----6------8----------8------6---6------
-----------9--9-9------7-7-7---7-7----7-7-----9--9-9----7-7-7-7-----
---------10-10---10---8-8---8-8---8--9---9--10-10---10-8---8---8----
--------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------
F G F F#G
---------------------
----6--8--6-7-8------
----5--7--5-6-7------
----7--9--7-8-9------
---------------------
---------------------
repeat everything again from the top minus the intro:
then,
here is the quasi lead lead break passage: the chords are C-Eflat-F, then
G-F
once again, arpeggiated, and in inversions:
C
Eflat
F
-------------------------------------------------------
------8--------11---------11---------13---------13-----
-----9-9-----12--12-----12--12-----14--14-----14--14---
---10---10-13------13 13------13-15------15-15------15-
-------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
the G-F below is just chords, no appegiation till the F at the end of the part here:
G
F
G
F
G
F
-------------------------------------------------
----8----10----7----10---8----8----10------------
----7----10----8----10---7--7--------10----------
----9----10----9----10---9-------------12--10-9--
-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
then go back to the verse riff and chorus and ,,,,
there you go.
Al's part.
chuck's slide part:
this ^ i will use for slur.
/ means slide up
\ means slide down
b=bend up :on this song about a quarter step.
( ) means the note is accidental or a sympathetic note. it is subtle and may or may not played. it's just there. it is a nuance.
what chuck plays here is very simple: al has the major gist of the song, chuck is more complimentary, aside from his tasteful slide executions:
this begins with a slow slide from F to G, played two times
----------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
-----3/-5-------------------------------3/-5--------------------
-----3/-5-------------------------------3/-5--------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
during the verse chuck is playing a relaxed vamp to the cadense of the shuffle,
i latch onto the tambourine and the washboard and play the skat rhythm chuck
is doing.
this is a simple, simple song, but it shows how meshed both chuck and al in
the overall equation of the song. take one away from the other, and there's
something missing. moe. is one perfectly synchronised moe.chine.
anyways:
it is two note G chord:
-------3-----3-----6b-----3----3-----3-----3----3-3-------------
-------3-----3--x--6b-----3-x--3--x--3--x--3--x-3x3-------------
----------------x-----------x-----x-----x-----x--x--------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
to the chorus, simple slide from C-Bflat:
----------------------------------------------------------------
----5-\-3---------5-\-3-----------------------------------------
----5-\-3---------5-\-3-----------------------------------------
----5-\-3---------5-\-3----------------3---5---0---3-3----------
---------------------------------------3---5---0---3-3----------
----------------------------------------------------------------
to chuck's slide licks in between the verses.
(note, learn it first by note placement, then you can relax and do whatever
you feel like.chuck has some killer subtle accidental notes and overtones when
he plays slide. they are not flubbed notes or plucked wrong notes, it's the
overtones of the guitar coming though sympathetically. warren and derek are
surgically precise when they play slide.
chuck is , to a degree, not as masterful as the forementioned, but i love the
overtones and feedback he gets when he plays slide.
put on wormwood from the album and you can blatantly hear the feedback and overtones and accidentals.I love it.)
one more thing; when tabbing out slide, sometimes to get the nuance of slide, the note may a little above or below the fret, so i will jot it down as 3.5, meaning, the note is between the 3rd and 4th fret.
use the tip of the slide to execute the note on the 3rd fret of the of the
D string(F) instead of fretting it with your finger. it's not tricky at all,
and it really adds that touch to what chuck is playing.almost like hammering
on and pulling off to get that jiggy chicken picking riff, only with slide.
ghost slide to the 5th fret of the d string(G), meaning slide up to the 5th
fret from the 3rd fret, like a plane touching down on a tarmac.
subtleties, my man.
subtleties.
------------------------------------------------------------------- --
---------------------------------------------------------------------
-----3-/-3.5---0---------------3-/3.5--3-/-3.5--/3.5-\-3-0-----------
------------------0--3-0-/-5-------------------------------0--/5-/-5-
---------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------& lt;

*
trill this note with your slide moving back and forth quickly to "shake" it
aka vibrato

----------------------------------------------(0)-/5-/5---------

----------------------------------------------------------------
back to the verse and chorus, then
the break in C-Eflat-F and chuck's li'l ol lead slide solo.
chuck is playing arpeggios on the slide, since itis barred, this is as easy
as cake:let the notes ring through, don't cut them from ringing out. electric
slide is way cooler than acoustic for this aspect. just listen to the dither
version,m you'll see what i mean.
